The Other Option, Trade Pierce and Rebuild

If the Celtics decide not to put talent next to Pierce, they can decide to shop him for draft picks and help.  I came up with this crazy trade idea that I believe makes the Celtics good for years to come.  All of the salaries work.

Note: These two trades aren’t completely rebuilding, they’re actually acquiring players and picks.

Trade 1: (RealGM #3980094)
Atlanta Sends:
Joe Johnson
Shelden Williams
Salim Stoudamire
#3 overall
#11 overall

Boston Sends:
Paul Pierce
Tony Allen
Ryan Gomes
#5 overall
#32 overall
Minny pick

Trade #2: RealGM # 3980163
Milwaukee Sends:
Charlie Villanueva
#6 overall
future conditional 1st

Boston Sends:
Brian Scalabrine
#3 overall
2008 2nd round

Evaluation:
In the 1st trade, Boston is happy because they get 2 lottery picks while acquiring Joe Johnson, an all-star, and Shelden Williams, a decent big man.  Atlanta is happy, because they get a superstar in Paul Pierce, while acquire young capable talent in Ryan Gomes and Tony Allen.  They also will still have a great draft pick in a loaded draft.  This is a draft pick even better than number 3, because they can draft Mike Conley without feeling guilty about potentially passing up Al Horford.  The second trade moves Boston down 3 spots, picks them up a future first, and give them a good role player in Charlie V.  Milwaukee is perfectly happy, because they can move up, and take whoever they want, probably Al Horford, whom they can stick next to Bogut to make a sick frontcourt.

Boston’s Draft:
#6 – Corey Brewer
#11 – Spencer Hawes

At number 6, Boston picks up a potential replacement to Paul Pierce, who is decent on offense, but even better on defense.  At 6-9, he has the ability to become a Teyshawn Prince – esque star in this league.  Spencer Hawes is the future at center.  At seven feet, he has the low post scoring ability and touch to become a realy threat in the league.

Roster:
Corey Brewer
Spencer Hawes
Al Jefferson
Rajon Rondo
Delonte West
Kendrick Perkins
Joe Johnson
Charlie Villanueva
Leon Powe
Allan Ray
Shelden Williams
Sebastian Telfair
Gerald Green
Salim Stoudamire
Wally Szczerbiak

Depth Chart:
PG – Rondo / West / Telfair / Stoudamire
SG – Johnson / Wally / Green / Ray
SF – Brewer / Green / Wally
PF – Big Al / Charlie V. / Williams / Powe
C – Hawes / Perk / Williams

Minutes:
Big Al – 33
Rondo – 30
Johnson – 35
West – 23
Wally – 22
Green – 15
Brewer – 24
Charlie V – 13
Williams – 10
Hawes – 19
Perk – 15

Team Prediction: 40 – 42 2nd Atlantic 8th seed.  In another year or two, when Hawes and Green are fully developed, this team can win 50+.  Celtics get cap space with Theo, let Wally expire, Charlie V. is traded, Joe Johnson maybe, and you have a solid young core that can compete for the next decade.  These trade ideas are a little crazy, but they actually might work.
